This is a very thoughtful story about how Simon (a preteen?) must leave Paris to spend his vacation with an elderly friend of a friend on the French coast. He learns a fair amount about the sea and comes to love it, as do we the readers, but he also learns to care for Tonton Apostol, who is both kind and mysteriously distant at times. I enjoyed speed-reading this as an adult, but think it would be most appropriate for 9 to 10 year olds who would enjoy a thoughtful, slightly mysterious novel. The final poem by Victor Hugo and info about storms and the sea are a wonderful touch.
